March 18, 2008
The Mississippi College School of Law Moot Court Board (Board) is pleased to announce that renowned national security and international human rights attorney Kristine Huskey will speak at the law school April 1st. Huskey, a professor and Director of the National Security & Human Rights Clinic at the University of Texas School of Law in Austin, Texas, will deliver remarks as part of the Board’s annual United States Supreme Court Practice Series (Practice Series).
“We are extremely excited about and greatly anticipate Professor Huskey’s visit,” said Victoria Lowery, Director of Advocacy and Moot Court Board Advisor at Mississippi College School of Law (MCSOL). “Professor Huskey is recognized around the country as an expert in national security and international human rights law, and her remarks will provide our students with an experience not available at many other law schools.”
In addition to her work at the University of Texas School of Law, Professor Huskey has previously represented the Guantanamo detainees in Rasul v. Bush, the 2004 United States Supreme Court decision which won the right of the detainees to challenge their detentions in federal court. Professor Huskey also represented Omar Khadr, the Canadian citizen detained at Guantanamo and charged with war crimes under The Military Commissions Act of 2006. She has visited Guantanamo more than a dozen times and is a frequent media contributor discussing Guantanamo and War on Terrorism issues. Professor Huskey is also a Fellow at the Robert S Strauss Center for International Security and Law and a contributing author to One of the Guys: Women as Aggressors and Torturers, an anthology addressing the abuses at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo.
Featuring speakers who discuss their experiences with the United States Supreme Court, the United States Supreme Court Practice Series is an annual event sponsored by the Mississippi College School of Law Moot Court Board. Previous participants include United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, United States Supreme Court Clerk Major General William Suter (Ret.), Kannon Shanmugam of the United States Solicitor General’s Office, and Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood.
Professor Huskey will speak from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1st, 2008, in the MCSOL Student Center Auditorium. Time will be reserved for audience questions, and light refreshments will be served following the conclusion of Professor Huskey’s remarks. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
