Our Mission:

To seek justice and mercy by providing legal services and spiritual counsel to those in need.

Our Key Verse:

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.  Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” – Proverbs 31:8-9.

Our History:

Mission First Legal Aid Office is a collaborative effort of Mississippi College School of Law and Mission First, the urban outreach ministry of First Baptist Church of Jackson.  It officially opened its doors to serve underserved residents in Jackson in October 2006.  The Legal Aid Office was made possible by a generous grant from the Hurst family in tribute to one of Jackson’s leading attorneys, the late Joe Jack Hurst.  Hurst was a proponent of service to the underserved throughout his distinguished career.  In furtherance of that commitment, the Hurst family provided the resources to found the Legal Aid Office.

Mission First Legal Aid Office is unique among legal service providers in Mississippi in that no other organization takes a Christian holistic approach to address the underlying spiritual and other problems that may be causing or contributing to the legal problem at hand.  The staff and volunteers are motivated to serve out of their personal faith.  However, Mission First does not limit its services to any race, color, sex, age, national origin, religion or any other basis other than emphasizing service for those with moderate to low income.
