Making A Statement: MC Law Hosts Annual IL Opening Statement Competition

MC Law hosted the 1L Opening Statement Competition November 13-15, 2017. The competition consisted of 21 first year law student advocates presenting an opening statement for a criminal fact pattern on both the Plaintiff and Defense spectrum.

At the end of the quarter-final round, the four advocates with the highest scores - Karmel Keeton, Alexis Armstrong, Matthew Sherman, and Katie Anne Collins - advanced to the semi-final round. The final round was held in the MC Law Advocacy Courtroom on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 5:00 P.M. Following the final round, Matt Sherman was named the Winner and Karmel Keeton was named the Finalist.

ABA Arbitration Regional Championship Winners

Recently MC Law and the ADR Section of the Mississippi Bar co-hosted the ABA Arbitration Regional Competition. Twelve teams competed representing the following law schools: LSU−Paul M. Hebert Law Center, University of Florida, University of Oklahoma College of Law, University of Iowa College of Law, University of Mississippi, Samford University−Cumberland School of Law, and Mississippi College Law School.

The following schools advanced to the final four: University of Mississippi, University of Oklahoma College of Law, and two MC Law teams. In one semifinal round, MC Law defeated the University of Mississippi 3-0; in the other semifinal round, MC Law defeated the University of Oklahoma College of Law 2-1.

In the final round, the two MC Law teams competed against one another for a seat at the National Arbitration Competition with 2L’s Jimmy Yocom, Meaghan Jordan, Blake Harthcock and Winston Franklin being named Regional Champions. 3L Brittney Piñon and 2L’s Samuel Goff, Amber Stewart, and Brittany Brown were named Regional Finalists. Both teams are expected to travel to the ABA Arbitration National Competition in January 2018 to compete for the National title. (Pictured are MC’s Champion and Finalist teams)

The teams were coached by Jessica Pulliam ’16 of Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics; Caylon Dunnels ’16 of Robertson + Easterling; Kasey Mitchell Adams ’15 of Butler Snow; and Amanda Hill Fritz ’14 of Chhabra & Gibbs.
